About VGOG

Video Games for Old Guys is a one-man show, created by me, Mike Olgren. I am a retired ER doc and life-long tech geek. VGOG is purely a hobby, motivated only by a love of gaming.

Gaming Cred

I started playing Pong in 1973, followed by arcade games, and then computer text-based games in 1977. I believe my first PC video game was Might & Magic (1986). Since then, I have played regularly, focusing on RPG, FPS, and deck-building games. In retirement, I probably game about 20-30 hours per week. [I do have a life outside of gaming!] I would rate my overall gaming skills as average. However, put me in a Call of Duty deathmatch and I definitely stink.

Site conventions

NOTHING on this site is written by AI. AI “authorship” is garbage, IMHO. This site is intentionally plain. I want it to load quickly for you. Also, see bias #3 below.

Currently this site has no advertising. It is possible in the future I might add affiliate links (if you click on a product and buy that product, I get a tiny bit of money, at no cost to you).

Due to overwhelming spam-bots, I do not allow comments on this site. Maybe if I can find a good plugin I’ll try it in the future.

My machines

My desktop is a Dell XPS 8940 with an Intel i7-11700 CPU @ 2.50 GHz, 16 GB RAM, and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX3060 graphics card.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 3530 with an Intel i5-1334U @ 1.30 GHz, 8 GB RAM, and Intel UHD graphics.

My console is an Xbox Series X.

My biases

To help you know my gaming biases, here is what I perceive them to be:

  • I don’t like “souls-like” games. The idea of repeatedly fighting battles to learn a little more about how to beat an enemy is not fun for me. Also, these games tend to favor those with above-average reflexes. They rarely employ stealth (see next bullet).
  • I love stealth. This generally leads me to become the cliched “stealthy archer,” although melee stealth done right (e.g. Far Cry) is fun too.
  • I don’t care much about graphics. I just can’t keep up with the latest hardware to enjoy the best graphics. For me it’s all about the gameplay. However, I do appreciate the difference between the initial graphics of Skyrim compared to Special Edition Skyrim.
  • I don’t like multiplayer. My reflexes are not what they used to be, so games aren’t fun where the young folk out there destroy me in multiplayer.
  • I suffer from “restartitis.” Unless a game has a really great story, I will play the beginning parts over and over, with the goal of creating the “perfect” character. A few of the games I played start to finish: Baldur’s Gate (original), The Last of Us, Fallout 3, and Far Cry 3.
